VE-Day 75th Anniversary

WOIMT ve day poster

On Friday 8th May 2020 we will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the end of the war in Europe VE-DAY. Many of us had planned Street Parties or had invited friends and family round for a BBQ and drinks. Unfortunately these have had to be cancelled due to Covid-19.

So we at What’s On In My Town want you to join us in celebrating VE-Day with a Stay At Home Celebration. Because of  social distancing we don’t want you going out and mixing with others we want you to celebrate in your own homes.

We want you to put out homemade bunting, as they did in 1945, Learn the dances from the 40’s, try cooking using war time recipes and at 3pm join the nation in raising a glass to those that gave so much.

At 7pm churches across the nation were to ring their bells for peace. Sadly churches are now closed and this can’t happen SO.. now at 7pm we want you to go into your garden or by your flat window and play and sing along to We’ll Meet Again by Vera Lynn. A song that meant so much then as it does today when we all want to  go out and meet our friends and family again. For those that can’t go outside and those who want to remember loved ones lost in the conflict join in after the Queen’s speech at 9pm on BBC 1

To help we will be linking to some great resources pages, How To videos and well anything that can make 8th May a special day as we remember and fight Covid-19 together.

Make sure you follow your local What’s On In My Town social media page and look out for the hashtag #stayathomeveday and make sure you send them any ideas you have and your photos.
